All Is Well But the Bliggity Blog Is No Longer

Hi Anyone Who Still Reads This,

The Clue Bus is a thing of the past...for now.  I've entered the land of Google Classroom so that's where I post now.

If any former students want to stay in touch, I will still stop by the blogspot every now and then.  Otherwise, you probably have my email or my number.

Love and Light Always,
Beltran

Posted the Goods on Google Classroom

Happy Monday, Lovelies.

Thanks for showing up, writing EYC #2 and reading “The Power of Others”. This week will be full of food for your brain. And I can’t wait.

For tomorrow, have your TED Talk #1 Notes.

Absolutely fantastic today, Lovelies.

A homerun kind of day.

Have a great weekend.

Dear Lovelies,

Thank you for the work today. If you didn’t finish your card, feel free to bring it to class tomorrow. And speaking of tomorrow, it’s SAS Round 2. Make sure you submit your work via Google Classroom and consider Brene Browning it up and stepping into your vulnerability.

I posted all the info on Google Classroom. So check there but before you go, really consider Brene Brown. She knows of what she speaks.

See you tomorrow for some Amy Tan time.

Amy Tan Mother Tongue and Empty Your Cup

It seems redundant to post here and Google Classroom so maybe I’ll stop or maybe I won’t. Perhaps this space will morph into more of a space for me to daily journal or just keep in touch with former students. We’ll see.

At any rate, today I introduced Empty Your Cup - our Monday practice. And I posted the Amy Tan assignment for Wednesday. If you were absent, you can see me during Advisory to catch up.

Hope y’all had a nice weekend.

End of Week Two

Happy Friday, Lovelies -

Thank you for another solid week and for a strong start to SAS. I’m thinking I’ll be transitioning out of the blog sooner rather than later considering we have Google Classroom. It might be time for even more change. After all, my precious Room 853 ended so why not this as well?

I’ll keep you posted.

Does anyone even read this? Any former students?

Super Shout Outs

Hi Lovelies,

I hope today’s lesson underscored the value of marking up your texts and “owning” your books. Tomorrow is your first Stuff About Stuff. I posted in Google Classroom yesterday with an example. I will be posting later today with a space to submit your work.

And thank you to Team Maddie and Jenny for guest speaking in period 5. It’s my honor to call you former students.

See y’all tomorrow.

Hi Lovelies,

Thanks for today. Make sure you read the Adler piece, annotate and come to class prepared to discuss. I’ll model what I want so it’ll be a learning curve...If you were absent, see me tomorrow for each class specific google classroom code.

Have a great rest of your day.

Assignment for Tuesday

Dear Lovelies,

Happy Friday.  I hope you had a great first week at school and are headed into an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.  We all deserve it.

Before I go any further, two things:  First off, thank you.  I appreciate you showing up.  If I see you on Tuesday, you are MY STUDENTS.  With that comes all the privileges and responsibilities necessary for a fantastic year of learning.  Secondly, the following assignment is due Tuesday EXCEPT FOR PERIOD 4.  Because of the assembly, your assignment is due on Wednesday.

So...what's the assignment?  I want you to write (not type) at least a page of writing that answers the following prompt:  Based on the lessons taught in class this week, how would you describe the manner in which you see?  What is your outlook/philosophy on life?

Keep in mind some of the influences that impact outlook like DNA, Upbringing, Environment and Experiences.  You are NOT to turn this piece of writing into a sensational piece of gossip or tabloid fodder...as in, don't be so specific that you are sharing your secrets or airing dirty laundry.  Paint broad strokes.  EX:  My philosophy in life is based on the mantra "Love and Light" due to some unfortunate life experiences that taught me that optimism and joy are choices.  AS OPPOSED TO: Let me tell you what happened when I was 16.  Got it?

You will be expected to hand in your writing at the end of class and you will also be asked to volunteer to present your work.

And while we're at it, I will be giving you our Google Classroom codes next week so be sure to sign up for the class before next Friday.

If you have any questions, I will be checking my email at random points throughout the weekend.  Bear in mind I am not looking for perfection - just conscious, wholehearted effort in response to the aforementioned prompt.

Love and Light,
Beltran

This Is Water

Lovelies -

One of my favorite days is to introduce David Foster Wallace's speech "This Is Water".  What the hell is water?  Indeed.  If you were absent from class, I am so sorry, but all of you should watch/rewatch the video linked HERE.  Tomorrow in class I expect you to show up with a completed Rhetorical Triangle - that means look up the rhetor and gather basic biographical info about him.

Period 4 will have the Grade Level Assembly so you've got extra time to get the work done.  Otherwise, I'll see all of you in B6 for some more learning.

Beltran

Textbook Day = Limited Learning

Sorry for the wash of a day, Lovelies, but you had to grab your textbooks.  Now that's taken care of, gear up for tomorrow's lesson centered around a basic tenet of class - water....I promise it'll make sense.  Just show up.

Hope you're checking the blog...are you?

And if you didn't fill out/finish/turn in your index card, make sure you do.

Beltran

Hello Rhetorical Triangle

Hi Lovelies,

Hope you had a good day at school. I introduced dancing today (excellent job), the concept of critics not counting, and the beautiful Rhetorical Triangle. You also wrote for a bit of time with the prompt “Your Turn”. I can’t wait to read all about you.

Tomorrow we will be checking out textbooks so please bring your ID cards and schedules. We’ll walk over after we dance and I explain the assignment for post textbooks.

Thank you for a wonderful Day Two in Baby Bungalow B6.

Day One, Year 22 in the Books

Hello, Lovelies and Hello Baby Bungalow 6,

Thank you for today. I find it fitting that as I was welcoming new Lovelies to B6, Beloved Room 853 was being torn down. May the new year bring with it all the magic and music, love and light that our old space had.

It was a pleasure meeting all the new faces, and I’m curious to see who opens their hands.

Here’s to a great day.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Hello Baby Bungalow B6

Hi Lovelies,

Anyone still out there checking the blog??

I hope you had a nice summer and that you're ready for a new academic year.  Congratulations are in order because Baby Bungalow B6 has arrived.  She's got a lot of potential but I will always, always, always have a huge space in my heart for Room 853.  (And in case you care, the whole 800 building is near its end.)

I'm working on a new book list and if you're interested, stop by at the end of September for a copy.  The new Spotify Playlist will start on Monday, and we may or may not "Circle Up" depending on the integrity of the bungalow floor.  (We moved a table yesterday and the floor kinda sorta broke.)

Sending you all good things as we enjoy the final weekend of summer.  Don't be strangers, dear Seniors.

Love and Light,
Beltran

The End of an Era

Dear Room 853,
Thank you for rising up to meet me each day these past 10 years.  Every morning I felt grateful and thankful to unlock your doors and manifest my positive intentions.  You've witnessed so much - from angry, bitter kids who clearly need love to sweet souls who radiate sunshine.  From dance circles to impromptu runways, from TED Talks to spoken word poetry, to peals of laughter and tears of sadness, you, my room, have seen it all.

Thank you for holding space for me and for all the Lovelies from 2009 and on who passed through your doors.  I will miss you.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Goodbye Period 5...and Room 853

Period 5 -

Thank you for being a fun class to look forward to after I ate too much food at lunch (or completely forgot to eat because I was too busy talking during lunch).  You will always hold a special place in my heart as the last set of students in this magical space.  And that (almost) the entire Fowler clan was in attendance is the cherry on top of this sweet treat called teaching.

I hope each of you has the summer you deserve - that you wear sunscreen and your heart on your sleeve.

Love and Light for the last time from your English teacher,
Beltran

P.S. - I'll say goodbye to my precious space after I turn in my keys tomorrow..."what a long, strange trip it's been".

Goodbye Periods 3 & 4

Dear Periods 3 & 4 -

It's always bittersweet to close one chapter, but I truly hope the ending to our time together marks the beginning of a new adventure for you.  Thank you for making the middle of my teaching day always something to anticipate.  From fascinating SASs to mind blowing magic tricks, each day was an absolute trip.

All the best to each of you as you journey forward.  May the wind forever be at your back and may the road always rise to meet you. #snapsforthat

For the last time, y'all...LOVE and LIGHT,
Beltran

Goodbye Periods 1 & 2

Dear Periods 1 and 2,

First off, thank you to those of you who physically showed up.  I not only notice that, but I appreciate it as well.  Thank you for walking in all those months ago and staying and giving me and the class a chance.  I hope your experience was a positive one, and that you learned more about the kind of person you are and want to be than whether or not an Oxford comma is needed.  Both are important, yes, but I think one holds more value if you are to live your version of a "good life".  Besides, you can google that grammar sh#t.

Secondly, thank you for allowing me to fulfill my own version of a "good life".  I have a life of abundance and magic and love, and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to use my talents in service of a greater good.  I'm not perfect, and we definitely had good and bad days, but I truly embraced each moment for what it was and what it could teach me.

Finally, the concept of love and light.  I told a few of you this today, but those of us with tattered hearts (all of us, right, but some hide it better than others) have these little cracks caused by life experiences.  The light gets in through those cracks.

Before my first day teaching, way back in 1998, my mother gave me a card that said I was going to do a great job - that she was proud of me - that she loved me more than she could ever say.  A week or so before she unexpectedly entered the hospital in 2016, I forwarded her an email from a student who thanked me for inspiring her.  One of the last texts I received from her said, "I am so proud to be your mother."

I try to make her proud in my intentions, actions, and the manner in which I carry myself.  I hope I did right by you and that she's proud of me still as we close the door on our time together.

Love and Light to you,
Beltran

P.S. - If you want your Empty Your Cups I will have them for you Monday.  xoxo

Lemons

I have a happiness headache because that's just how the Universe works.  I swirl in magic and today is no exception.  After a disappointing start to the day, I was reminded that when life gives you lemons, listen to Sebastian.

If you were here, you know.

That's it.

Have a beautiful weekend and if you're headed to prom, be safe.

Love and Light,

P.S. - TED Talks will continue on Monday and at last, we will be back on a "normal" schedule.

Day One is in the Books

I can't out anybody with names but I loved everyone's TED Talks today.  Just the mere act of showing up is difficult, and I wholeheartedly thank all of the Lovelies who presented.

I offered my compliments in each class but for all of you who didn't get a chance to witness the bowtie and the button down, the sick shoes and style, just know that Room 853 was all about the intersection of purpose and vulnerability.

Kudos to you all.

TED Talks continue tomorrow.

Thank You, Clara

Dear Lovelies,

If you weren’t lucky enough to be in class today, I’m sorry for what you missed. The senior class valedictorian delivered a beautiful and informative presentation on all things college. While I know college isn’t on everyone’s agenda, Clara succinctly organized a “How To” for you. I can’t thank her enough and certainly hope those of you in attendance will ACTUALLY THANK HER.

Your TED Talk transcripts were due this morning at 8am. Fingers crossed you didn’t disappoint. And presentations begin on Thursday!

Another wonderful guest speaker tomorrow for Periods 2&4.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Lovelies,

Can you believe TED Talks start next Thursday? How the heck can that be true when I just met you?! At any rate, it is true so come to class with open hands. Period 5, also come with Post-It Notes if you want some that are not yellow. All I have is yellow.

Thanks for testing!

Testing Day One

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  It is absolutely no fun administering a test so I can only imagine how tedious it is to take them especially if you had History and my class today.  That being said, tests continue tomorrow.

Periods 2 and 4 will be taking the Science portion of the standardized test.  And please show up because if you don't, I will have to administer a make-up test to you AND THAT WILL BE NO FUN AND BOOOOOOOOO.

So I shall see y'all tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear that your dog is a "little mutt".  That must be difficult.  But seeing as how you just showed me a photo of the dog, I feel less sorry for you because she is absolutely adorable.

So Lovelies, congrats on being done with AP testing season.  You should be proud that you made it.

A Firefighter Stopped By

During period 5, a firefighter stopped by and it was glorious!  A former student, Kyle is the epitome of a solid human being.  He's actual magic.  And to add further proof to his awesomeness, Winston literally said, "Do we get candy for this?" at which point Kyle produced 5 lollipops.  Swirling in magic, y'all.

HUGE shoutout to all of you who helped clean my room today.  Thus it begins...thus it begins.

Hope APUSH went well and that AP Bio is just as grand.

Themes in Argument

Dear Lovelies,

In our mini-lesson today, we went over some overarching themes found in Argument - Q3.  After your other AP tests are conquered, I would recommend reviewing quality literature that can serve as evidence under the "umbrella" themes of identity, conflict, journey, etc.

If you're taking AP Psych tomorrow, good luck and, of course, good luck with APUSH on Friday as well.

Tomorrow's mini-lesson will center on the one book I know that hits every universal theme found in literature.  Come to class to find out!

Love and Light,

See y'all Tuesday.

Dear Room 853

Dear Room 853,

Some people will likely think I'm crazy for writing this blog post to you, but today, you and I said goodbye to SAS presentations and soon we will say goodbye to the Lovelies and each other.

I believe in intention and though mine is oftentimes off the mark (too much ego, y'all, too much ego), I can vividly recall moving into this space when I was a new mother.  I showed up with a diaper bag and lots of stress and you wrapped me in your arms and gave me a safe space where I could still be me - separate from the sacrifice of being a mama.

Thank you for giving rise to some great presentations over the past decade and more recently, the last several months.  We've had fun.

Shout out to Jenna for being the last SAS presenter.  You did good.

Love and Light to us all,
Beltran

You've Got An Easy Assignment To Complete

Hi Lovelies,

I feel like I keep saying how important it is to check the blog daily and here I am proving how true that statement is.  I've decided not to collect TED Talk Notes on 5/1 and in lieu will be using your TED Talk Chart as the entered grade.  So thank you for turning it in.

That means that on Wednesday, 5/1, you will simply need to turn in your One Pager on a book from the Book List unless you have already spoken to me about another book.  Also keep in mind that you can submit more than one One Pager and boost your grade.

In addition to that info, Extra Credit for those of you who signed up for Saturday's Practice Test.  In order to make it more worth your time, I would review the components of a Synthesis Essay from a test prep book.  You're likely familiar with the format especially if you are enrolled in APUSH.

Finally, all of you need to sign up for my Google Classroom Page.  I decided to use it so you can submit your TED Talk Transcripts there and I can archive them in case there are any issues with your final grade.  I will also upload the TED Talk Rubric to the page along with tips and helpful hints.

In order to join the class page, complete the following steps:
1.  Go to www.classroom.google.com
2.  On the Classroom Page, click ADD + > Join Class.
3.  Enter the Code 1moby3 and click Join.

I'll give you until Friday to join and I'll add it as an easy (hopefully) grade.

Peer Review on Q2 tomorrow and SAS on Friday.  ONLY 2 more chances ever to present an SAS!!!! And only 32 more days of school!!!!

Love and Light,
Beltran

Monday Quiz Day

Thank you for showing up to take the quiz today.  And thank you also to those of you who let me know ahead of time about your absences.  I'll be working on grading your quizzes this week so stay tuned.

Also, heads up that your TED Talk Charts are due tomorrow.  Either bring in a hard copy or share it with me via Google Docs.  (Thank you to those who already did.)  We will be playing Brain Drain tomorrow so be thinking about your teams...the focus will be on TED Talks and the rhetors along with random common knowledge and trivia like BEYONCE songs.

Wednesday and Thursday we will be working on Q2.  The AP test is in about three weeks, so every little bit of practice helps.  And, of course, Friday is SAS.  I will be speaking to each class individually about what I am looking for in the final 2 slots we have left for SAS.

Gentle reminders regarding the work that will be due on Wednesday 5/1.  Comment below and tell me what's due.  The first 5 comments will earn some sweet treats because why not??

Only Two More SAS Days

Lovelies,

Have a great weekend, and a quick shout out to Period 4 for the singing.  That lifted my spirits in ways you'll likely never know.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Since there are only 2 more chances to present (4/26 and 5/3), I'd say focus up.  And if you want to present more than once it will help your grade.

Speaking of grades, vocabulary quiz Monday and don't forget the approaching deadlines for one pagers and such.  I'm not going to be very forgiving about grades especially when I was very clear about what would be expected.

Ending on a positive note, hope to see you at the dodgeball tournament later.  My kiddos and I will be there supporting our favorite PLHS teacher.

Wonky Day

Y'all I saw pictures of the bungalows.  Insert sad face here.  Then as I was complaining (I know, I know, don't complain...) Becker came over the announcement to say a gas line had been hit.  Whoa.  Thus the chaos begins.

Kudos to period 5 for dealing with the weirdness as we tried to pretend we weren't concerned with a gas line being cut...no big deal, right?  At any rate, we dissected the 2010 Banneker prompt so if you were absent, get notes from a classmate.  And if you listened to my Q2 hacks, finish up the chart I showed you to make.  It can be the difference between a passing score and the alternative.

For those of you in class tomorrow, we will do some more test prep.  If you're going to the College Fair, have fun and enjoy.  See you Friday for SAS.

Your TED Talk Should Be a Reflection of Who You Are

Will Stephen's TED Talk is everything a TED Talk should be - funny, smart, and clever.  On a deeper level it stands as an example of the structure a TED Talk should follow.  Rewatch and learn.

Tomorrow we will jump into Q2 Rhetorical Analysis - come ready.

And if you are going to be absent on Thursday, we will be writing on a prompt that I will post tomorrow.

All Over the Place

Honestly I am conflicted as a teacher when it comes to the system I am a part of and the core values and beliefs I hold dear.  Education is beautiful.  Schooling is not.  Agree or disagree as you wish but know that the basic skills you need cannot be found just in a textbook.

Be good at all you do - not because you are perfect - but because you give it your whole heart.

These are my thoughts after reading some EYCs and watching y'all take MC today.

Tomorrow be ready for a fun TED Talk to help you with yours and Wednesday we will be attacking Rhetorical Analysis essays.  These are generally the most challenging but as usual, your success on them centers around whether or not you can actively read with a mind at work.

See y'all tomorrow.

Hi Lovelies -

Happy Thursday.  Please access THIS LINK  to read the three model essays for the "Polite Speech" prompt.

The Value of Polite Speech

Hi Lovelies -

You worked in small groups today to think and write about the 2015 Q3 prompt on the function or value of polite speech.  Tomorrow in class we will be discussing your claims and evidence as well as looking at released model essays.

Any of you who want to write the essay for practice, feel free.  I can score it for you.

Also, I mentioned how Aug Pie got scared last night after watching "Jeopardy".  If you watch tonight (7:30 on NBC) take a selfie and you can earn some extra credit.  But actually watch for real.  Cheating on that is a bit beyond lame.

And as a reminder, this Friday is our chance to finish CS 2.0 (if needed) and begin our last round EVER of SAS.  Seriously, let that sink in.  SAS ends on 5/3 FOREVER.  :(  The following Friday 5/10 is a Study Hall for the test, 5/17 we are tearing down my room, 5/24 there is no school, 5/31 is block schedule time for TED Talks and 6/7 is the first day of Finals.  And speaking of SAS, I want the best ones ever.  Solid, interesting, thoughtful, maybe even heartwarming so Room 853 can get the last of the good vibes.

See you tomorrow.

Love and Light,
Beltran

TED Talk Tuesday - Review

Hi Lovelies -

I'm typing this as my second period works and chats.  Some notable lines:

"I'm wondering how many words I've misspelled in my life...and I was like whoa."

"Then he said, Dude, don't worry bro."

"J*&b just did something wrong."

"Why are you being so angry?"

Now for the rest of the day:

"I wear these to track meets to protest."

"He fractured my foot."

"You have to use two fingers."

"No need for the attitude, A."

"Calm down, E."

I wish I had been writing down quotes all year.

At any rate, some important info:

Take your Create Something Projects home please.
RETURN MY BOOKS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
Vocab Quiz on Monday 4/22
Brain Drain Game #1 Tues 4/23 (TED Talk Chart due)
AP Practice Exam on Saturday 4/27

Tomorrow we will be writing and working in groups so be ready.  A little different than before.

Enjoy the rest of the day and to my period 5 Lovelies, I hope your day gets better if it's been a little bleh.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Lots of Monday Info

Lovelies -

Read up.

Bring all of your TED Talk notes to class tomorrow.  Instead of watching a TED Talk, we will be reviewing the TED Talks we've already seen in order to have them as quality evidence for the AP essays.

You have a Vocabulary Quiz on Monday the 22nd so be ready.

And if you want to take the practice test on Saturday, April 27th, make sure to sign up via the google doc (previously posted) by Wednesday the 24th. If there are any issues, let me know and I can help.

I have about 15 free AP test prep books for the taking.  I'll have them out at at the beginning of lunch TOMORROW if you want one.

And finally, A JUNIOR LEVEL ASSEMBLY TOMORROW in the BIG GYM during ADVISORY.  Make sure you go.

See y'all tomorrow,

On the Train to Nowhere

Dear Lovelies,

27 classes until the AP Language Exam and I couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off our work for the next few weeks than with a wonderful week of Create Something 2.0.  In all truth, presentations are a rollercoaster of ups and downs but it never fails to impress me, the talent and intelligence that gets overlooked in a typical classroom.  Maybe our class isn't what you like or enjoy, but I do know that all of you will look back on your days at PL and remember - good or bad - our time together.

We're going to end this shared experience in June so open your hands and embrace what's left before it's too late.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Candy Cane Shanks and Strange Room 853 Mojo

Dear Lovelies -

I am convinced Room 853 knows she's nearing the end because the funniest/strangest things keep happening.  Create Something continues to be a rollercoaster ride and I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow.

Unfortunately, we hit the tougher part of the year with systematic AP test prep and general stress levels rise.  Just stay calm and know it all goes as it must. If you are taking the AP Language exam, you will be ready.

Have a great afternoon and I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Create Something 2.0

The fun continued today from avocado face masks to live performances to websites, merchandise, insightful forward thinking ideas with disposable cameras to a new club that will offer free SAT and ACT tutoring.

I think I forget (and a lot of teachers forget) how there is such a distinct difference between school and education.  I hope seeing and hearing from your peers reminds you of the difference.

Today will go down in the books because of so many things.  But mostly, "Where did Isaac go?" Wow.

I hope your vacation has been good to you.  I just wanted to quickly post a reminder that your Create Something 2.0 projects are due on Monday.  Because there are so many of you who didn't sign up to present, YOU SHOULD ALL BE READY TO GO.  I might call on you.

Enjoy the last couple days away and I will see you Monday.  47 school days left before finals...but who's counting???

Happy Vacation

Dear Lovelies -

Happy Spring Break to you all.  I hope you have fun and are safe.  Before you get too far into vacation (or maybe you're checking this and it's Sunday night before our return) please understand that on Monday, April 1st, CREATE SOMETHING 2.0 Projects are due.  I think some of you signed up for presentations on Monday but even if you didn't YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED TO PRESENT.  If you don't present, that gets recorded as a zero.  Boo.

I'll post who signed up next weekend.  Check back then.

Enjoy your break.

In Class Essay #1

Thank you for your presence in class today.  It truly is a pleasure to see those of you who not only show up but SHOW UP.  Much respect to period 1 in particular - the "singers" who volunteered were incredible.  I appreciate you and your wholeheartedness. And thank you to the humans who upgraded their airline seats to first class.  The view is much better up here...

Speaking of respect, kudos to some ladies in period 4 who requested the Jonas Brothers song that made people so happy.  Excellent song choice before having to sit and write.

Those essays you churned out will be peer reviewed tomorrow.  If you were absent then you'll have to play catch up.

Don't forget our new SAS format for Friday and Create Something 2.0 sign ups were posted at lunch today.  All of you need to have your work on Monday, April 1st regardless if you're presenting. Also, out of respect for you and your time, below you will find Literary Terms for AP Language.  You will be quizzed on them.  The first quiz will be on Monday, April 22nd. (See what I did there?)

Don't let the volume of the list freak you out, just read it.  You already know most of them.  BREATHE.  And all I will ask is that you define the terms and offer examples.  No tricks.  This should help boost your grade.

1.  rhetorical question - a question asked in order to have a dramatic effect; EX: You really expect me to study all these words?

HERE YA GO:

allegory, alliteration, allusion, anaphora, antithesis, aphorism, appeals to authority/emotion/logic, apostrophe, assonance, asyndeton, attitude, begging the question, canon, chiasmus, colloquial, conceit, concession, connotation, consonance, critique, deductive reasoning, denotation, dialect, diction, didactic, elegy, epistrophe, epitaph, ethos, eulogy, euphemism, exposition, extended metaphor, fallacy, figurative language, flashback, genre, homily, hyperbole, imagery, inductive reasoning, inference, irony, jargon, juxtaposition, litote, logos, loose sentence, metaphor, metonymy, mood, narrative, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, paradox, parallel structure, pathos, periodic sentence, personification, point of view, prose, realism, rebuttal, rhetoric, rhetorical question, sarcasm, satire, simile, symbolism, synecdoche, syntax, theme, tone, voice

Thursday In Class Work

When you read the Released Essays, please make sure you don't peek and steal a glance at what College Board gave the work.  AFTER you've read the 3 essays AND filled out page 2 of the Peer Review Worksheet, you can look.

How close did you get to the 1-9 scores?  Anything shock you?

*I'll update this post later so make sure you come back.**

Dr. Duckworth

Angela Duckworth's TED Talk is short and to the point.  About 7 minutes long, it proves you can craft a solid TED Talk in less than 10 minutes.  Sorta like the one you have to create for your final! You have weeks and weeks to think and create your own TED Talk and I can't wait to see and hear what you do.

I'll pass out the rubric at the beginning of May and I will put sign up sheets out then too.  Speaking of sign up sheets, the Create Something 2.0 slots will be posted Wednesday at lunch.  Also, if you're interested in your Grit Score, take the quiz here.

Tomorrow and Thursday we will be working on Essay #1.  If want some heads up tips, you can do a little preview HERE.  Friday is your SAS opportunity.

So Many Thoughts

Dear Lovelies,

Some of you no doubt have a lot of opinions and thoughts about grades and this class and me and school and life.  All I can say is that each day offers an opportunity to do better.  You have 12 more weeks as a student in Room 853 and then boom.  No more.  Ever.

I reviewed grades and expectations for the next six weeks so if you were absent, please see a classmate and they can fill you in.  If something doesn't make sense, please ask.

Tomorrow we will watch our TED Talk and I will review expectations for the final.  I will also share the rubric (yes, rubric) with you.

Wednesday and Thursday we are working on an in class essay.  Friday is SAS.

I ALSO WOULD LIKE MY COPIES OF LONG WAY DOWN, OUTLIERS, TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS and AMERICAN LIKE ME back.

Rhetor for tomorrow is Angela Duckworth.

Have a beautiful day.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

Dear Lovelies,

Thank you for the discussion today.

If you'd like to go down the most fantastic rabbit hole of knowledge, feel free to check out this link.  We are all interconnected and our existence is the result of other people's decisions. Every choice has consequences.  Luck, preparedness, opportunity.  I just can't stop thinking about who we come from and what makes us who we are.

Hi Lovelies,

Here is the article I referenced today.  From the Chicago Tribune, I think the reporter does a solid job of pointing out how our culture perpetuates prestige. Read it and consider what you think.

Thanks also for the Outliers discussion. We will continue tomorrow so if you didn't SPEAK, there is still TOMORROW.

TED Talk Tuesday

Afternoon, Lovelies -

Last TED Talk of the six weeks.  Woo hoo!  58 more school days.  How is that even possible when it feels like I just printed out rosters for the classes and you were all just a bunch of names? Wow.  At any rate, access the TED Talk HERE.

I think Daniel Pink argues some interesting claims and I mostly enjoy his perspective because I struggle daily with motivation - whether it be avoiding the snooze button on my alarm or eating food that is healthy for me, even motivating myself to write every day and practice gratitude.  It ain't easy. I also struggle daily with my participation in a system that is obviously (based on feedback today) not working for a lot of you.  I think J put it best in my period 2 - students are the products, teachers are the workers.

Be sure to rewatch the TED Talk and take some quality notes.

In terms of discussion for tomorrow, just show up having read the book.  Do come with at least one thing/issue you found interesting/discussion worthy.  Let's start there.

See y'all tomorrow (or not).

Beltran

Multiple Choice Monday

Hi Lovelies,

Below is the "homework" you are expected to complete.  It connects to our Multiple Choice passage from today.  I know you have a lot to do since Outliers needs to be read by Wednesday so I am giving you until MONDAY 3/18 to complete this.

I have high standards for the work I expect you to do with this piece and I am going to hold you to them because I know you can reach them.  Do not half "butt" this work.  (Since it's due Monday 3/18, it will count as the first significant grade for the new grading period but I hope you are more motivated by the deliberate practice than you are by the carrot I am dangling for you to chase.)

This is good stuff and good for you too.

You should have started most of this, but I am posting all of the steps and including a delicious link.

Multiple Choice Deliberate Practice

1.       Read through the passage AND the questions once and annotate (that means define) every unknown  vocabulary word.

2.       Read through the passage again and annotate for understanding.

3.       What is the rhetor’s main point in paragraph 1, 2, etc.? (8 total)

4.       How does paragraph 2 connect to paragraph 1? How does paragraph 3 connect to paragraph 2? (continue through to how paragraph 8 connects to paragraph 7)

5.       What is the rhetor’s “big picture” purpose and main point in the passage as a whole?

6.       Did the rhetor convince you? Interest you? Lead you to disagree strongly? How did the rhetor achieve an effect on you as the reader? (Nowhere in this is room for your like or dislike of the text. Your job as a thoughtful consumer is to THINK about what the rhetor’s purpose is and how they are using rhetorical devices/strategies/tools to achieve it [their purpose].)

7.       After accessing the link on the blog and reading the article (Go down the rabbit hole if you want to but at the very least) answer this: Who is the rhetor of this passage and what impact do you think he/she had on their intended audience?

Access THIS LINK.

NOW, go back and answer the 16 questions.

Thanks for all the effort.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Friday SAS

Happy Weekend, Lovelies -

I absolutely enjoyed the SAS today.  Every class had something beyond phenomenal happen.  And while I am proud of each presenter, I must say that I was particularly overjoyed at some of the new voices I heard in Period 2.  I think we often forget how scary presenting can be and we teachers (yes, myself included) start to think that a lack of presenting is indicative of a disinterest in class or a lack of concern for an education.  I'm proud of the people who presented, and I hope they know that they are seen, heard and valued.

As a preview for next week, there's some big stuff.  The 6 weeks ends on Friday so I will be posting a checklist you will need to submit to me by Thursday.  (Look for this on a Monday or Tuesday blog post.) It will be a part of the first assessment.

Monday we will be working on MC.
Tuesday is our TED Talk.
Wednesday is the Outliers deadline.  If you show up, I will assume you read the WHOLE book. Don't disappoint.  We will be having class discussions/activities on Wednesday and Thursday.
Friday is the final SAS for the first 6 weeks.

Have a great weekend and get some reading done.  AND SIGN UP FOR YOUR AP TESTS IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THEM.

Counselor Meetings Tomorrow and Other Info

Happy Wednesday, Lovelies -

As you know, y'all are headed to the Counselor's Office tomorrow to select your Senior Year Classes.  Head Counselor Brandl sent the message below.  Make sure you read it and take care of your business.

Also, I need back any books you still have from Semester 1.  I only have 16 copies of Tiny Beautiful Things and I started with over 40.  If you're holding on to a copy of that or frankly any other book from months ago PLEASE RETURN MY BOOKS.

from Mrs. Brandl:

"We look forward to meeting with junior class the next couple of days!

Please help us remind the students that if they are electing to take Mesa College classes they MUST complete the necessary steps.

  1. Go online to Mesa College  LINK HERE
  2. They will receive an email confirmation with their CSID #. This is very important! They must write this number on their . . .
  3. Completed Yellow form. We need two copies of the yellow form, for Fall and Spring= with their CSID #, and signatures front and back!

The Fall 2019 Application is live now!

An Unreal Opportunity

Happy American Like Me Reading Day.  As you read, I write and I come to you with an amazing opportunity.  Before I announce, I am fully aware of financial constraints which is why I am offering extra credit and not a grade.

If you would like TONS of extra credit for the six weeks, simply bring in items for our Red Cross Box.  The more items you bring, the more extra credit you get.

The Red Cross Club is collecting new

  • toothbrushes
  • toothpaste
  • socks (men's socks size 9-11)
  • blankets
  • flashlights with batteries
If you are able, please consider heading to The Dollar Tree  or Target or even your local grocery store and buy a few of these items to help someone in need.

Before you donate, make sure I know so I can record your extra points.

Thank you for considering!

For tomorrow, be ready for SAS (that means you have emailed me your work as well - even if it's just a picture of your notes).  Friday we will be doing a practice Multiple Choice.  And as a heads up for next week, Monday (EYC and grading/reviewing Friday's MC), TED Talk Tuesday, in class reading, some AP test prep on Thursday and Friday SAS.

Love and Light and let's fill up our Donation Box!

Thursday Heads Up

Lovelies,

You are writing as I type.  Thank you for your effort.

Out of respect for your time, I am giving you a heads up in this blog post.  So hopefully you will read it.  I posted yesterday about ikigai and a few of you contacted me - thank you for that.  In addition, I am aware that your deadline for selecting classes is soon.  Right?  So I am making some changes to our regular scheduled programming and it goes a little like this:

Monday: In class Debate on this article.  So read it, annotate it and come to class ready to talk.  If you don't have a printer, take notes in your spiral.  NO EXCUSES.

Tuesday: TED Talk #19

Wednesday: American Like Me reading

Thursday: MC #7 Practice

Friday: SAS (presentations/work emailed to me before Friday)

Important Info:

  • Deadline to order AP tests is Friday, March 15th.  Order NOW.  Use this link.
  • 1:1 Counselor Meetings Thursday, March 7th
  • Deadline to have Outliers  read is Wednesday, March 13th. (I don't know how to set a reading schedule for this when you can figure it out on your own.)
  • 6 weeks ends on March 15th
  • Create Something 2.0 is due for presentation after Spring Break on Monday, April 1st
That's it for now.  Remember to submit your SAS before tomorrow if you want credit.

Happy Reading Day

Thank you to the Lovelies who showed up to class and read.  I hope the time was well spent.  Before I talk about tomorrow, I wanted to share a few personal thoughts.

Y'all know I am a mama to two very precocious little ladies - one who would rather shoot hoops than sit with a book and one who seems like a guru trapped in the meatsuit of a child.  I want for them the same things I want for each of you - truly.  I want them to know their value and worth separate from accomplishments or appearance and I want them to be healthy (mentally, physically, spiritually) and happy.

I want this for you too because a world of broken, lost, fearful people doesn't do any good.  So, if my daughters were picking their senior year classes, I would encourage them with some homemade guacamole (shout out Miss Bobbi - yes, we named our avocado tree).  We'd snack on some grain free chips (Shout out Siete Family Foods - google them my lovelies) and guac and I would listen to them and then offer this advice:

Look at what you prioritize for yourself.

What do you love?
What are you good at?
What does the world need?
What will get you paid?

The intersection of these 4 answers is your reason for being.

Not all of you love learning in a classroom setting.  Not all of you breathe books.  Not all of you would feel unbalanced without a pen and paper.  And that's okay but don't paint yourself in a corner and sign up for classes that don't fit into your wheelhouse.

I happen to love reading, language, books, learning.  I happen to be good at public speaking, reading a crowd, thinking on the fly, being creative, and seeing things some people miss.  The world needs kindness and empathy.  I make a nice income by educating.

If you don't know what you love, pay attention to what makes you lose track of time.  And if the only answers that pop up are sleeping and mindlessly scrolling the internet, I honestly don't know how to help.  But certainly there's something.

I hope to see you all tomorrow and I hope this simple post has been a reminder that only you have the power to be happy.  If you want to go to college, you will.  There is a school for you.

Start learning for learning's sake.
Stop chasing grades.
Stop making excuses.
Become the kind of student you know you can be - a student of life who is curious, empathetic and kind.

Rant over. (By the way, if you are interested in the concept of ikigai, email me.)

If you want to check out a copy of American Like Me, stop by my room tomorrow at NOON.

Bring your notes to class tomorrow.  Assessment Time.

Beltran

Malcolm Gladwell TED Talk

Welcome back, Lovelies.

I hope you had a wonderful day back at school.  I for one was happy to see you all although admittedly, I am a much better Me after I wake up a bit.

Here's the TED Talk for today - number 18 by my tally.  To be clear, it is expected that you rewatch the TED Talk, take quality notes and connect all the dots going all the way back to the first week of school.

Tomorrow we will be reading American Like Me and I AM BEYOND THRILLED.  If you borrowed a book from me, I need them back by Period 1 please.  And per usual, I will allow books to be checked out BUT I am making a change.  If you would like to check out a copy, you may do so during LUNCH on Thursday 2/21.  I want everyone to have an equal chance and the way I was doing it before just wasn't fair.

As for the week ahead: reading tomorrow, in class assessment on your reading Thursday - no need to study and you'll be able to use notes and Friday is SAS.  You need to email me or share your SAS before class on Friday.  If you have questions about that, email me or talk to me.

I'll see you tomorrow for some reading time.  And how I wish I was loaded with cash so I could serve up some warm croissants and muffins paired with your choice of oj, hot tea, cocoa or coffee.  Someday, y'all.  Someday.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Why Isn't Every Week 4 Days?

Truth.

I hope y'all have enjoyed (and are still enjoying) some time away from school.  In prep for tomorrow, please research Malcolm Gladwell as your rhetor.  His name is one you all know so show up prepped.

See you tomorrow,
Beltran

Happy Valentine's Day

Hi Lovelies,

May each of your days be filled with the positive love and support you deserve.  :)

Thanks for discussing American Like Me and offering up your opinions and insights into America Ferrera's book.  I hope you get the chance to read more over the long weekend.  Remember that I need the books back BEFORE 1st period on WEDNESDAY.

Enjoy the long weekend and I'll see you for TED Talk Tuesday.

Love and Light,
Beltran

P.S. - I'll post the rhetor and a "Week Ahead" post by Sunday night.

American Like Me Discussion Tomorrow

Hi, Lovelies -

I certainly love teaching you but nothing beats seeing you with books...reading.  I don't say it enough, but thank you.  I hope you're learning something or considering things in a different way.  One of my all-time favorite book characters, dear old Boo Radley, said it best at the end of To Kill A Mockingbird didn't he?

To prep for tomorrow, please have thought out answers to the questions I posted on Monday's second blog post.  You don't need to have essays written, but I am expecting more than some "off the top of your head" answers.

In terms of groups, we will organize based on what essays people have read so be willing to share that.  And looking ahead, start thinking about an essay that resonates with you the most.  I have a couple that spoke to the core of who I am because of content and style, and I am intrigued by what is (or isn't) catching your eye.

Also, Mr. Posternack will be stopping by each of my classes to chat with you about AP Literature.  FYI.  If you have any questions, be ready to ask them.

Love and Light,
Beltran

TED Talk Tuesday

Dear Lovelies,

Today's TED Talk can be accessed HERE. While I found the rhetor to have some gaps in her logic, I did appreciate her main tenet that we each possess an attribution bias that can lead to internally or externally crafting narratives that cast us as the victim or hero in our stories.

We engage in daily fiction and become defensive in critical learning situations such as when our core beliefs and values are questioned.

Metacognition, or basically thinking about thinking, can prevent a lot of default settings or habituated learning patterns.  The more times you bump into something, the more apparent it is that you still have something to learn.

I'm excited that tomorrow is going to be a READING DAY.  Scream it from the rooftops and come to class ready to read. If you borrowed a copy of the book, I need them all back by 1st period please.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Second Monday Post - Thursday's Discussion Questions

Lovelies,

Thursday you will all be participating in small group book discussions based on the essays you've read.  I haven't decided if the groups will be self-assigned or assigned by me so stay tuned.  In the meantime, here are the discussion questions you will be using.

To prep, you can go all in and write out answers and support with textual evidence or you can err on the side of minimal effort and just "think" about your answers.  (If only I could include a laughing emoji here.)

  • In Outliers, our second mandatory read, author Malcolm Gladwell posits that a person's phenomenal success can (to a certain degree) be a combination of preparedness and opportunity - essentially what we like to call "luck".  In the essays you've read thus far, what is each rhetor's "outlier" moment?
  • One of the main reasons I selected this text as a mandatory read is because of its obvious connection to Chimamanda Adichie's TED Talk "The Danger of a Single Story".  Even if you haven't connected per se to an essay, what "single stories" have your found in your reading?
  • Oftentimes, the ways stories are told in mainstream media stems directly from who has the power.  What books and movies from your childhood are the ones that "stand out"? What characters are beloved?  What movies resonated with you?
  • What do you know about your family's history/immigration story?  What is your origin story?
  • Many college application essays include a question that centers around identity.  What makes you you?
See y'all tomorrow.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Monday Musings

Hello, Lovelies -

Thanks for writing your EYC and participating in the MC practice for today.  If you have any questions, feel free to stop by during Advisory tomorrow or Wednesday.

In other news, if you are interested in signing up for your AP tests, all the info is online on the school website - the home page.  I'm posting a link HERE but in case it doesn't work, just figure it out.  If you need a fee waiver, see Mrs. Denney.

Tomorrow we will be watching the aforementioned (on a previous blog post) TED Talk.  Come to class with your rhetor research done please.  If we have any extra time, you'll be able to read some American Like Me.

NO SAS THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF THE HOLIDAY.  NO NEED TO SUBMIT AN EMAIL PRESENTATION.

I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Love and Light,
Beltran

As Promised - A Look Ahead at Our Week

Happy Saturday, Lovelies -

I hope you are enjoying your weekend even though it's a bit cold and gray.

We spoke at the beginning of the semester about a little "heads up" for curriculum so out of respect for your time and all the other things in your life, here's a look at our week.

Monday: Empty Your Cup #3 (thoughts on American Like Me) and MC #6 Practice
Tuesday: TED Talk Suzanne Duncan  (feel free to set up your Rhetorical Triangle, watch, etc.)
Wednesday:  American Like Me in class reading (if you're already done with the book, bring another one to read or see me for a recommended title)
Thursday: Class discussion based on questions that will be posted on the blog Monday night.

I'm sure you haven't forgotten, but you have a 4 day weekend upcoming.  YAY!

Also, my little one seems to have a cold so on the off chance I have to stay home and take care of her, you'll need to use the blog to stay updated but most of you already do that so no worries.

Have a great rest of your day.

Love and Light,
Beltran

***UPDATED*** American Like Me Questions to Consider

Hi again.  I was just rereading the blog post and I confused myself.  Am I asking you to answer the questions just for the first few essays or all of them?  I'd like you to consider them for each essay as you get to them.  Consider it your post-reading reflection of sorts.

As for the first question of when the essay was written, they were all obviously written in 2017/2018 upon America Ferrera's request.  But since you're making rhetorical triangles that factoid would be included with context.

Finally, a former lovely mentioned she heard some rumblings about the book list when some of y'all were leaving class after I passed out the list.  Remember my advice about acting, saying, doing ALL things as if someone is watching/listening/recording???  You should really listen to my advice.  Someone is always listening and who you are when "no one" is watching, is your CHARACTER.  But thanks for still talking about class after the bell rings and about books no less!
********************************************************************************************

Dear Lovelies,

Thanks for reading today and feeding your mind (and dare I say, soul??).  You should have annotated into your Reading Journal and maybe read a few essays.  Assuming you completed the Introduction, Reshma Saujani, Al Madrigal, and Jenny Zhang please answer the following questions in your notes.

If you haven't read these yet, answer the questions when you do.

For each of the essays, consider the Rhetorical Triangle (and DRAW ONE - these notes will save you when it comes time for a quizzity quiz.)

Specifically, consider the "exigence" (all the circumstances surrounding the writing - and a FAVORITE buzz word for the AP Language test/SAT/ACT).

  • When was the essay written?
  • What were the personal and historical circumstances of the time?
  • Who is the rhetor?  Did you research beyond just reading? At the very least google them so you know what they look like and what they're up to.
  • What tone/style does each entry possess?  (I thought Al Madrigal's piece was like an extended joke whereas Jenny Zhang's leaned more toward a commentary on the American Dream.)
  • Who do you think the intended audience is for the book?
Since you know how I don't appreciate disrespecting people or their time, heads up that you'll need to jot down answers to the questions above for each of the essays you read.  Just make it a habit to add to your Reading Journal.

More reading time next Wednesday.  And if you want to check out the book, stop by right after 5th.  the best time to check out a book would be over the weekend (and we have a 4 day weekend coming up next week so...)

Thanks again for reading.

And the first SAS is tomorrow!

Beltran

American Like Me

Hi Lovelies -

Thanks for participating the in Q&A today regarding classes.  I hope the senior insight was helpful.  Keep in mind that you need to register online by February 24th and your Counseling Office day will be Thursday, March 7th.

We set up a reading journal today for American Like Me and got a jump on reading.  Plan on in class time to devour the book tomorrow and on the following Wednesdays: 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, and 3/6.  Maybe make a playlist for books??

First SAS of the semester will be on Friday.  5-4-3-2-1 on that opportunity.

Enjoy the rest of your day and I'll see you tomorrow in class.

Love and Light,
Beltran

P.S. - If you want to check out a copy of American Like Me, please see me at the end of period 5 and return the book by Period 1 the next day or after the weekend.  It's a class set.  :)

Post PAC

Hi Lovelies -

Hope you are beginning to think about next year's schedule.  Tomorrow in class we will be discussing senior classes so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.  We will also be previewing American Like Me.  Some of you have already started reading it, but I want you to come to class with your answer to the following question:  What does it mean to be American to you?  I don't expect an essay but I certainly expect more than "Oh, the answer's in my head."  In fact, have your response written on an index card or half sheet of paper and I'll take it at the door.  An "entrance slip" if you will.

See y'all then.

Love and Light,
Beltran

Meet Me in the PAC Tomorrow...

...I'll be the one in black.  :)

Check in with me before the presentations please.

Wednesday we will return to class and watch our TED Talk and then Thursday we will start our reading of American Like Me. Or maybe no TED Talk and just diving right in to the essays on what it means to be American.

By the way, Run For Cover Bookstore down in OB (4912 Voltaire St.) has an entire shelf dedicated to our book list.  I know spending money on books is a luxury but if you have the means, supporting a local independent bookstore is pretty much the cat's meow. Also, brainstorm: comment if you would be interested in winning a gift certificate/gift card for there.

Wishing you a glorious rest of your day.  I'll see y'all tomorrow in the PAC.

Beltran

It's Raining

Happy Saturday, Lovelies -

I just hopped on to say hi and to wish you all a happy rainy weekend day away from school.  I am currently taking a break from reading your Holiday Letters.  In line with sympathetic joy, I am so hopeful that all of your goals come true.  Happy, whole people make the world a better place.

I started my morning off with the chopping off of my hair.  Just felt like it.  And I am convinced there is some sort of allergen in my room because my eyes have been red and itchy all week but magically, they clear up by the time I am halfway home.  So, don't be surprised if you see me Monday with less hair, some eye drops and my glasses.  :)

Enjoy the rest of your day and know I am beaming you all some standard issue love and light.

Beltran (future inhabitant of Magical Bungalow B6)

P.S. - In case I failed to mention it, I'll have a table of FREE stuff every Wednesday (unless cancelled) at noon.  I'm Marie Kondo-ing my classroom.

Second Semester Book List is HERE!!

Dear Lovelies,

Are you checking the blog?  Have you made it a habit of mind...married with action??  At any rate, I passed out the book list today and my request is that you show up with an annotated list tomorrow.  In your annotations, include the following:

* Author
* Brief Summary

Only annotate for the books you haven't read (unless, of course, you want to annotate all of them).  There are technically 29 titles, 2 are mandatory, and one is just a recommended author.  So, READ.  This request is non-negotiable because as we learned yesterday, when we say we don't "have time" it's really code for "it's not a priority".  And if reading and AP Language is not a priority, the consequence of that decision could be a lower grade or a non-passing grade.  So, please, please, PLEASE do what works for you.  And if that means you won't work hard and read, you have got to reorganize your schedule.

Tomorrow, I will be collecting your ANNOTATED BOOK LIST FOR A GRADE.If you were absent, you can get a copy from me in class when you return and give me the annotated work the next day.

We will be organizing work tomorrow and on Friday your "Holiday Letters" are due.

Love and Light,
Beltran

P.S. - I will have books available for checkout tomorrow.

TED Talk Tuesday

Lovelies,

I hope you got something valuable out of today's talk.  I expect you to rewatch the TED Talk.  Also, read the transcript and/or print it out and annotate it.  It's such a good one.

Also, I explained (except to Period 4 - we ran out of time) that you have 2019 Holiday Letters due on Friday for presentation.  You should post date the letter to December 2019, address it to me ("Dear Beltran") and write about all the amazing things you manifested in the categories of School, Relationships and Self.  Have fun and include photos if you'd like.  Ideally, the letter would be printed but you don't have to print it.  You can handwrite it but make sure it's blue or black ink.

If you're interested in going down the rabbit hole of knowledge, I used an Annie Dillard quote today and the inspiration came from this glorious site.  At the very least, read the article.  Feed your brain.

Tomorrow the BOOK LIST GOES LIVE.  Thursday we are Marie Kondo-ing your first semester work and Friday your letters are due.

Love and Light,
Beltran
