Updates and Info

Happy Friday!

Just a few things...Here's a great read about a successful business person.  Read it if you're inclined.  Miss out if you enjoy the bliss of ignorance.

As for the College Project, you should have already shown me your Brag Sheet.  If you did, thank you.  Other deadlines are below:

  • Scholarship (Joy Lauderbach) - template filled out and rough draft of essay.  Checked on WED 6/3 in class.
  • College Template for at least 1 school - Checked on WED 6/3 in class.
  • Rough draft of at least 1 personal statement for any of the colleges you are applying to. I'll check on Thursday 6/4.
  • Check out this site for good info as well.  Thanks Faye.

College Project

So, the brag sheet will be checked for completion on Friday so please have it done.  If you need to work on it outside of class, feel free.

For any of you looking to get a head start on the personal statements, use this link for the UC personal statement.  If you are intending to apply using the common app, access the personal statement prompts for 2015-2016.

Be prepared to research and complete information on at least 1 college on Friday and to complete at least 1 scholarship application as well.  Work on anything you'd like at home but I will have templates for colleges and scholarships in class tomorrow.

Here's the link to the PL page on current scholarship information.

Thanks for working on this.  You will thank me later...

TED Talks and College Projects

Apologies if thinking about your senior year and college is overwhelming but the train's a comin' and I want to help prepare you...Before my 3 year old gets bored with old videos on my phone, let me give you a quick rundown for the week.

If you would like to bring your own laptop to class, feel free (I can keep them safe in my room until after school).  Otherwise we'll be using the netbooks.

Wed - Naviance brag sheet work
Thurs - College Info sheet for at least 1 for sure school
Fri - Scholarship for at least 1 award
M, T, W, Th of next week - work on personal statements.  We're just focusing on UC and Common Apps so if you have any other potential schools, look online and see if they have specific essay prompts.

I'm so sad that we're losing our relationship.  I just feel like I have changed since we started back in September and I'm so busy and you're so busy and besides...(insert weak vocal trail off that implies I don't know what else to say.)

See you tomorrow.

Thank You

I appreciate all of you watching the video today and for the discussion/lecture after.  It's crucial to know how interconnected we all are - our decisions, choices, etc.

Good luck to those of you taking Bio tomorrow.  I'm sure you'll do great as Ms. Maas is a ROCK STAR TEACHER!

For those of you who will be in class, we will enjoy a nice Beltran-esque version of SAS for fun.  And then periods 6 and 7 we will be attending Samakosky's Poetry Slam.  Exciting.

I love you and all thank you for being a part of my story.

All of Us

Together again, tomorrow!  Please show up because I miss you!!!

Hope APUSH went well.  No bagels, right?  Or did you?!

Happy APUSH

First off, good luck tomorrow on APUSH. Do not eat a bagel. Eat bacon or an avocado. Please. Secondly, I miss your faces. I feel like we really did break up and I miss how we used to be.  And finally, I'm almost done reading every single journal you turned in and OH. MY. WORD. I fell in love all over again with you.

Missing you terribly,
Me

Luck Isn't What You'll Need...

...so don't even bother with that.  Just have fun and drain your brain of all the stuff that's in there.  You'll be okay.  Promise.

Thank you for dancing.  On so many levels, that's what all of this (moments, seconds, events, tests, life) is about.  Just being able to dance and support and love one another.

Extreme shout outs to my period 7 teachers who consistently show me what community is and to the rest of you "happy feet" who brought the vibe up.  I appreciate it.

Have a great night - rewatch that TED Talk from today - find a dark blue pen and go to sleep!

xoxo

p.s - pack a protein rich/healthysnack.  (boiled egg, bacon, banana, sugar snap peas, apple and peanut butter, almonds, etc.  AVOID THE BRAIN SUCKING CARBS!

Journals and Juicy Bits

So much to say...First off, who gave me those delicious avocados??  Please tell me.  :)

Secondly, here is the Study Guide again.  Remember that the only issue is the multiple choice - the guide says to skip questions.  Don't do that!  Guess if you need to.

Next, journals are due tomorrow at the beginning of class.  I'll collect them as entrance slips.  If you have an actual journal (like a bound book or spiral, bring that and if you have been typing on a google doc, then print that out, staple it and bring a hard copy).  You should have 36.  I'll be reading them on Wednesday as you test.

And finally, links below to the juicy bits I complied from your classmates' presentations.  (Thanks to CV, EM, AH, EM, PD and S for sharing great stuff!) Check it out if you want.

- Kinda Rascist
- The Race Card Project
- Story Corps
- Soul Pancake
- The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
- Larry Wilmore
- Brain Pickings

xoxo

P.S. - My best advice for Wednesday:  dark blue pen, a watch, and a good snack.  For tonight, review TED Talks, and for tomorrow night, review the Study Guide I linked above - particularly the essay sections.  Nothing else really you can do.  I think the argument prompt will be one on ethics of some sorts...I have no reason to think that though.  And the Rhetorical Analysis will likely be something difficult to read but remember that context matters so pay attention to the info at the top of the prompt.

Thank You

Shout out to your moms (and by that I mean the adults in your life who have guided you into mine) because without them, I wouldn't know you.  I wish you - and the important people in your life - all the best this Mother's Day.

I will share some of the other class' SAS on Monday for "food" so be ready.  And we will be using Monday and Tuesday to have a final push for the exam.  The preparation you must do should have already been done.  There's no studying and there's no amount of practice for the glorious out-of-our-control existence that is AP test day.  You'll be fine if you've been paying attention to what I've been doing for the past 9 months.  Funny that it's 9 months, too, don't you think?

Thank you for the gifts as well.  I appreciate them so much.

SAS Friday.

Potential Study Guide

For those of you who are looking for another resource to help you out, this study guide is good.  It has a few missteps - for example, it encourages you to skip multiple questions if you don't know the answer.  That's wrong!  But the rest is good.

Block Schedule tomorrow, so I will see periods 3 and 7.  Wednesday it's 2, 4, 6.

Brain Drain/TED Talks will happen during our two hour chunk o'time.  Yay.

xoxo
