Oliver Sacks Week (and other stuff)

Hope you enjoyed your rainy Monday - wish we could have had class in our fuzzy socks while wrapped in blankets with a hot cup of coffee but c'est la vie.

Because of Formal Articulation, we will be in the Counseling Office tomorrow.  Make sure you come to class FIRST and then we'll go...Since we won't be together, please take it upon yourself to watch the Oliver Sacks TED Talk and take quality notes.  He really was an amazing thinker and awesome human being.

When we meet for class on Wednesday, you shall share some of your OS findings with each other so fill your mind palace with good stuff.  Teaching others is the best way to learn.

I also mentioned last night's Academy Award winner for Best Picture "Moonlight".  While none of this will be on your 6 weeks test, (Oliver Sacks will) I still think it's interesting enough to check out.  Here's an NPR interview from Fresh Air with director Barry Jenkins and the writer Tarell McCraney.  Telling stories, reading stories, writing stories = THE BEST THING EVER!!! And shout out to Viola Davis for now holding an Emmy, Oscar and Tony!

Love and Light,
Beltran

P.S. - Any of you young writers?  Check out this awesome opportunity.  The conference is on Saturday, March 11th and is FREE.

Two Minutes is All It Takes

"The thing is, beauty comes in unbeautiful ways here."
"Beauty stops traffic.  I know."

Bill Hayes - Insomniac City

We all have two minutes to read for pleasure for the aim of this class is to give birth to readers.  Readers are people who actively engage in the radical act of empathy that is reading.  Empathy makes the world a better place (and if you haven't noticed, the world needs some help).  So, read tonight.  And if you find yourself a moment away from slumber and you haven't read for pleasure...see my floating face asking you WHY NOT?
Thanks for reading, annotating and charting today.  Tomorrow is SAS Round #2 so be ready.  I'll have blue sheets for you and I look forward to learning from you.

Here's to the beauty of random moments in the staff parking lot.  Ms. Graham rocks.

"One Can Be Alive...

...but half-asleep or half-noticing as the years fly, no matter how fully oxygenated the blood and brain or how steadily the heart beats. Fortunately, this is a reversible condition.  One can learn to be alert to the extraordinary and press pause - to memorize moments of the everyday."

~ Bill Hayes, Insomniac City

Thank you for writing today and for being present the best you know how.

Here's to the radical act of empathy that is reading.

Here's to sharing an apple with the love of your life.

Here's to being a selfless meatsuit of character (even when no one is watching).

Here's to you (and the "you" finding a box in the garage full of your high school journals).

Love and Light,
Beltran

Tuesday: Deepak, Elizabeth Gilbert, Bill Hayes, Mind Meltdown

What was today anyway?  Were we here or there or nowhere?  At any rate, it's over there now and we are here now but now is then and then is tomorrow and what is real?  Ahhhhh.

Here's the link to the TED Talk.

And here are the books...I should probably adjust the picture but I kinda like it all sideways and hanging off the edge - sort of symbolic if you ask me...

I'll see y'all tomorrow for another experience.

Love and Light,
Beltran

p.s. - I will email winners with gift options...I'm just being lazy.  Four day weekend and all..
