TED Talk #2 = Oh My Word
Make sure to rewatch the video, print out and annotate the transcript and add Adichie to your TED Talk Chart. I certainly hope you have a TED Talk Chart....as Brene Brown would say, "I'm just sayin'..."
Tomorrow in class, be prepared for some class discussion and more quality rhetoric!!!!
Love and Light,
Beltran
Today's Song: Diana Ross and The Supremes "Stop in the Name of Love"
The OG Beyonce
ReplyDelete185 Adichies walk into a bar and the bar tender says "sorry I can't serve you here because there are too many of you." Then the Adichies say "Well, better than being a SINGLE (story)." [Whoever reads this comment must try out for improv tomorrow at 5pm in the PAC]
ReplyDeleteI really liked today's TED talk, it was so intriguing and interesting to watch. I liked hearing and learning Adichie's perspective on stereotypes. I can't wait for more!
ReplyDeletegood ted talk today. now time to kill 2 birds with 1 stone
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed today's TED Talk. It tied in nicely with the idea of greeting others with open hands and understanding people before making assumptions based on what they look like.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder
ReplyDeleteAfter watching today's ted talk, I am really starting to understand how each lesson we do in class is connected in some sort of way. The lego piece I added to my pile today was definably an important one.
ReplyDeleteAdichie's message of the single story is like the judgements that everyone make about the people around us. But, once we actually start to get to know the person, they probably don't fit the stereotype person we pictured them to be.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought. Getting to know people lets us empathize with them and in turn makes us more likely to see them for who they really are. It's interesting because depending on the book it can either contribute to stereotypes or help break them.
DeleteWith a some research I found out that Chimamanda is part of Beyonce's song called "Flawless." One of her quotes in this song is:
ReplyDelete"We say to girls,
'You can have ambition
But not too much You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man'"
I'm really starting to enjoy these TED Talk Tuesdays!
ReplyDeleteToday's TED talk gave me a lot to think about. Interesting subject to think about!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to find out we were watching Adichie's TED talk, because when we had to look her up the first week of school I watched it, and rewatching it today allowed me to really digest what she said and catch important things I didn't pick up on the first time. :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved today's TED TALK defineltly see the connections in the class, thank you for showing us students Ngozi's many stories.
ReplyDeleteTodays lesson helped me think before I generalize how people are and what thier background possibly was due to stupid and unnecessary stereotype. Chimimanda Adichie really spoke to the audience in a sentimental and freindly way and this helped the message go in one ear and not out the other.
ReplyDeleteThe TED talk really expanded my mind on how we think by what we see and I’m now beginning to connect all the dots that all your lessons are connected
ReplyDeleteToday's Ted really got me thinking!Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI loved today's Ted talk! I am so suprized how everything we have done so far connects!
ReplyDeleteToday's TED Talk opened my eyes to the preconceived perceptions I had of people I've never even met and places I've never been to. I think Adichie had a wonderful lesson and I'm glad I got to hear about it. Also, I'm curious about her book now too. -Satori Jelden
ReplyDeleteAnother great TED talk. I'm really enjoying Tuesday's!!
ReplyDeleteToday's TED talk was very interesting, especially since it went hand in hand with the idea of being vulnerable enough to share your own side of the story. Being able to notice the similarities to Brené Brown's TED talk and Maya Angelou's piece was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteSuper interesting to think about how different frames of reference can change how an uneducated bias is formulated! Like everything we believe could simply be wrong!
ReplyDeleteToday's TED Talk really educated me on our influence on other cultures and how we are so misinformed. Too many stereotypes!
ReplyDeleteSo. Many. Connections. The Ted Talk was a real eye opener.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed the Ted talk especially because it connected with what we were discussing before watching it.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED this TED talk so much!! Everything is coming together and I am making the connections.
ReplyDeleteRewatched and refreshed.. Adichie tells Beltran students not to diminish the validity of what does not appear normal. Dancing in a classroom, but a classroom it remains.
ReplyDeleteSome good advice....
ReplyDelete“You can't just sit there and wait for people to give you that golden dream. You've got to get out there and make it happen for yourself.”
-Diana Ross
whaat this is her!!? iconic...
ReplyDelete"We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller
We say to girls: "You can have ambition, but not too much
You should aim to be successful, but not too successful
Otherwise, you will threaten the man"
Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
Always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important
Now, marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage
And we don't teach boys the same?
We raise girls to see each other as competitors
Not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are
Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political
And economic equality of the sexes"
Im starting to make connections that i would not to have even thought to make 2 weeks ago. Thank you Beltran!
ReplyDeleteI like finding the connections in the lessons. It's like having different puzzle pieces that fit together to make a big puzzle by the end of the year. I loved the TED talk today and understood where Adichie was coming from. Can't wait for more!
ReplyDeleteThe TED Talk today really made me think about the single stories I might be buying, and I want to change that.
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing us all these amazing Ted Talks! They continue to amaze me!
