Marina Keegan's beautiful piece can be accessed here.
Your job as a student who learns for learning's sake is to print the piece, re-read it, annotate as Adler would and be prepared to discuss the text in a Socratic (Beltran style) on Monday 9/25.
It will either turn into a quality discussion where we speak because we have something to say OR it will devolve into a "discussion" where we hear a few voices or worse, voices that feel they have to say something.
Consider the rhetorical devices she used.
I can't wait to see what happens...
Love and Light,
Beltran
Today's Song: Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About"
I just realized that the song was called "Something to Talk About" and it relates to what we did today, I'm so slow
ReplyDeleteThank you for today's lesson and open talk. I have trouble with public speaking but I know that if I practice little by little it will be a breeze to speak alongside my classmates.
ReplyDeleteThoroughly enjoyed hearing what everyone had to say today, as per usual.
ReplyDeleteHearing everyone else's ideas was awesome. A lot of them made very good strong points. Can't wait to do it again Monday with Marina Keegan's text!
ReplyDeleteAmazing how you, every day, find a song that connects perfectly to our lesson. Another great day today, can't wait to discuss again Monday!
ReplyDeleteDuring the read aloud in class, I really felt like I was in the car with her, now I want to read the rest of her book!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely getting my own copy of Keegan's book, loved that piece.
ReplyDeleteRe-frickin tweet
DeleteThe read aloud really struck a cord with me. And after finding out she died from a a car crash, ugh I don't know what to do with myself. Such a young soul lost :( I really want to read this book! I'll have to read it and we'll have to talk about it! Loved English as per usual :)!
ReplyDeleteafter discovering how she died i found photos of the car and it was horribly destroyed. makes her piece resonate within me more knowing i cant tweet at her to tell her how relatable and great her writing was.
ReplyDeleteI am excited for the socratic seminar because today I didn't talk. I was just not ready to speak to the class but I am ready to comtribute to the discussion on Monday.
ReplyDeleteI love that last part... Speak because you have something to say, not because you have to say something. Can't wait for the discussion on Monday!
ReplyDeleteHonestly today was a good experience from Keegan's book and what we talked about, but speaking out loud in class is a huge struggle for me which I wish to overcome and I also enjoyed the song we listened to today and it was fun as I danced with Briana!
ReplyDeleteI loved the book today it class and want to read more. It's cool how even though Keegan isn't alive today her works were saved and published into a book.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the essay today. The precise detailing made me feel like I was in that Toyota Camry with her. I am for sure going to read the rest of that book.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was so neat how she talked about something as simple as her car which sounds boring but she made it special and actually had me feeling like I wanted more. I hope I can one day elicit the same type of reaction out of someone with my writing. You better know I'm pumped for everything I will learn this year because that is my end goal.
DeleteI was so interested in getting to know Marina, and when the google search popped up talking about her in past tense and saying she died, I felt something in my heart. I love how detailed she was, and I imagined myself in that car with her. I will definitely be reading other works done by her.
ReplyDeleteI usually dont get attached to most reading pieces but what we read today in class about Marina Keegan grabbed my attention and I will check her out and look at her book.
ReplyDeleteKeegan's imagery and emotional connection were able to make something as mundane as a 2000 Toyota Camry seem wondrous. Definitely going to read "The Opposite of Loneliness."
ReplyDeleteI've downloaded a free sample of the book "The Opposite of Loneliness" on iTunes and started reading. I haven't read too much but so far it's pretty interesting.
ReplyDeletethe section ms.beltran read made me very interested in the book.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Marina Keegan's story you read us in class today. I think it's interesting how we attach memories to objects, and it makes it so hard to let go of them. I am for sure getting myself a copy of her book.
ReplyDeleteI would say that I treat my truck the same way Keegan did with her car.
ReplyDeleteToday was an opportunity to speak up and share their thoughts on a vice everyone must recognize and confront. I found it ironic how some including myself were slow to speak, but as seen in the excerpt you shared with us there are those who share their perspective and move people even after death.
ReplyDeleteReading "Stability in Motion" gave me a newfound appreciation for my 2007 Jeep Patriot. It was also very well written and I enjoyed reading it as a class.
ReplyDeleteI think one of these days you should play some country music
ReplyDeleterecently lost my beloved 1994 GMC Jimmy.. Keegan's writing tugged on my heartstrings a little extra today :(
ReplyDeletealso to all of the current juniors: ya'll are fools if you don't take the time to read this book.
ReplyDeleteI really liked today's discussion and the little piece of the book we read. It was a very interesting read and I can't wait to hear what people have to say about it!
ReplyDeleteThe text had me believe that i was a part of the story with the amount of imagery going on. Can't wait to hear other people's opinions on it Monday
ReplyDeleteI loved the piece you read in class today and I can't wait to read the rest of the book!
ReplyDeleteHearing Marina Keegan's essay about the way she lived her life and made memories in her car, then learning almost immediately afterward that she died in a car crash (of all things), barely out of college, was incredibly heartbreaking. No one knows how much time they have. Definitely a haunting reminder of life's fragility and a reminder to never take anything for granted.
ReplyDeleteI honestly loved the essay. 8 connected to the essay in so many different ways that i got chills multiple times in class
ReplyDeleteOne of my FAVORITE pieces from the year. This essay is helping me write my personal statement SO MUCH. Soak it in...
ReplyDeleteI think that it is great that we are getting these practice tests rather than a month before the exam like most AP teachers will do it is highly apreciated
