Some Prep for Next Week

Thank you for writing today.  I am looking forward to reading your thoughts on the JFK speech.  Tomorrow we have SAS Round #1 so please be ready.  I'll have SAS checklists on my end.

As for some prep for next week, you all will need to print the text by Judith Ortiz Cofer by Monday.  I hope posting today gives you enough time to access a printer.  (Note:  There is a weird typo on the first page..."coveted..." should read "I coveted..." and "las" which is supposed to be "as" but you can still read and understand.) Please do a little background research on the author but refrain from reading the text as we will be doing that together in class.

Have a great rest of the day and I will see y'all tomorrow.

:)

P.S. - shout out to period 3 and the fact that they made Mr. Chavez's day!

Nevertheless, She Persisted...

It's amazing to read rhetoric from decades ago that still inspires today...the power of a well-written speech cannot be ignored.  Check out this NPR article from 2011 that sheds some light on Kennedy's address.

Thank you for the work today - make sure you have gone through the questions I handed out in class...the fact that I made a trip to the copy room should indicate...well, something, don't you think?  It's so 1970s in there.

Remember to sign up or figure out who is presenting SAS this Friday.  (Anyone who didn't present their issue on Finals Day should get first dibs...).  I will post the SAS/form checklist I will be using but I'll print them out on blue paper so no need to worry about that.

I'll see you tomorrow as we continue to learn and grow and walk in kindness.

Love and light,
Beltran

P.S. - Coretta Scott King is a lovely name, don't you think?

TED Talk Tuesday

Thanks for watching the TED Talk today.  Jaw Shoeah is the best rhetor.  Love.  Adore.  Rock on.
Here's the link for the 2017 Life Sciences Summer Institute.  And be ready for the JFK jiggity jam tomorrow.  It will be great.

Love and Light,
Beltran

P.S. Be careful of all the grizzly bears on campus.

Ask Not...

Thank you for a beautiful day in class...I really do value and appreciate what we get to do here in Room 853.

For class on Wednesday, make sure you READ and ANNOTATE the JFK speech. (You can find it here.)  Show up like a "good student" would for class and be ready to think, discuss, share, talk, etc.

As for your brains, read your books, do a practice AP test, check out the test prep book from the library (or go buy one), troll the news, find something that will make you laugh (or cry), add stuff to your journal, work on prom dress notes, prep for SAS #1...the "work" is neverending especially for those of you who see through the veil of "This class is so easy...".

Much love and light,
Beltran

P.S. - P is a nice letter...parliament starts with "P".  So does "president"...

Emma Lazarus is Not Alive...Neither is Frederick Douglass

Thank you for participating in today's class discussion.  It's simply the beginning of what we will do this semester as we feed our brains.

Tomorrow we will MEET IN THE LIBRARY at the back behind the glass wall.  Articulation time!!!!  Woot woot.

Much love and light to you all.

Tomorrow is Going to Be a Great Day

Thanks for the attention in class....I really do appreciate the opportunity to teach you.  For tomorrow, please be ready to have a class discussion on Emma Lazarus' The New Colossus.  Do your rhetorical triangle, your rhetor's biographical information, annotations, connections, etc.

Be prepared to contribute - to speak.  Your voices matter.

Articulation will be on Friday so no SAS this week.  Our first will be on Friday, February 10th.

Have your Book Club info to me by Friday as well (that includes who's in your group and what you're reading.)

I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Go be kind.  The world needs some kindness, don't you think?

Love and Light,
Beltran

p.s. - Trope and Scheme are up to no good...
